We would like to give the Theatre Department some feedback as to what types or genres of shows we would like them to do next year. Genres or playwrights are more helpful than specific show suggestions. Also, the biggest question we would like to put to you is what type of musical you would like to see done. Examples are Sondheim (e.g. Into the Woods), which would mean a small cast and larger roles, or a big chorus show (e.g. Anything Goes). Post now.
Dear Bottom Liners, My name is Marianne and I am a local Girl Scout leader and community volunteer. I am writing to you on behalf of my almost 9 year old daughter who really wants to do something to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. She is involved in theatre locally (Candlelight Pavilion, etc.) and wants to put on a benefit currently called "Hear the Children Sing" where we would invite talented young people from the area to perform and ask people to come see the show and make a donation to the American Red Cross in lieu of selling tickets, although we could always sell tickets and donate the proceeds. We are really hoping to get a Claremont theatre to donate the use of their venue but I'm not having much luck. The School of Theology wants in excess of $2000 to use their theatre. My inquiries to CMC and Pomona (regarding Bridges) have gone unanswered so far, but to be honest I don't know if I'm contacting the right people. We are really hoping to use a nice theatre within Claremont that can hold a good amount of people comfortably. We've seen many shows at Big Bridges and thought it would be perfect, but I've heard they don't let people use the theatre while school is in session. We need help finding a venue that would like to be a part of this project and would be willing to donate the use of their facility, some equipment (microphones, a piano, basic lighting, nothing fancy), and a crew who would volunteer their time. Your input would be greatly apreciated. Thank you so much for your time, Marianne Marianne <MsStarlite@verizon.net> Thursday, September 08, 2005 at 22:50:19 (PDT) Ресторан "Сайгон" приглашает Вас на посещение! Perhaps a modern/original musical (RENT would be awesome if we can get the rights) or an older, well-known one (like West Side Story or The Mikado) that'll be a certain draw. As for straight plays, I'd definitely prefer some smaller-cast shows, or maybe larger plays with a well-developed ensemble. (I agree that Arthur Miller and Chekhov would be good choices). If we want to go the comedy route we should pick a strong show that's really funny in its own right--not because it's famous or "a classic". Preference for the Musical (Delete those you DO NOT want): Light Opera/Operetta (ie. Gilbert and Sullivan) Newer (Darker) Musical (ie. Cabaret, Sondheim) Jessica Dell'Era <jessica.dellera@pomona.edu> Pomona, 2006, Theatre (Dramaturgy) Thursday, December 23, 2004 at 20:54:53 (PST) General Comments: I would like to see more new works and unusual playwrights explored by the department. There are tons of small theatres in LA that specialize in this kind of work, and I don't know how to approach it as an actor. Also, I hear tell that the department has the chance to bring in Eric Bass from Sandglass Theatre to do a workshop; Sandglass specializes in innovative puppetry. I've seen their work-- it's really incredible. Huge puppets, interesting collaborations... So I'm hoping that happens. Preference for the Musical (Delete those you DO NOT want): Old Traditional Musical (ie. Showboat, Rodgers and Hammerstein, etc.) Newer (Darker) Musical (ie. Cabaret, Sondheim) As much as I'd like a newer musical, I don't know if we have the singers to do Sondheim. I'm really not one to talk but I just don't think that would turn out well. It would be an incredibly stressful experience. I'd love to see some Chekhov, but I know I'm just into classics. Some Miller or Williams could be extremely awesome--good ol' American theatre. And like Lynn said--roles for women! Just now Moliere. Ashley <amk02001@pomona.edu> Sunday, December 12, 2004 at 12:53:25 (PST) General Comments: Everyone should check out Andrew Lippa's "Wild Party"- it is a fantastic musical that takes place in the 1920's at this wild party which features drinking and sex. Also this musical is good because it doesn't need good singers as much as belters and people who can act and really sell it. Along the same lines I love Cabaret- yea Kander and Ebb. Really I just think we should do something with grit and not a fluffy musical- I do love Rogers and Hammerstein though, hehe. But something sexy!!
